As you may probably be aware, the Charente-Maritime is well known for being the second sunniest region in France after the Cote d'Azur, and boasts long stretches of sandy beach, wonderful bright yellow sunflower fields as well as acres of vineyards for the production of cognac and Pineau, the area's fortified wine.

St Jean d'Angély is the perfect base for exploring the area's attractions and relaxed lifestyle. In approximately 45 minutes you can be at the beaches and restaurants in Fouras, (49 kms) which has regular ferries to the small holiday island of Aix where motor cars are taboo, or at Châtelaillon Plage with its waterpark and long sandy beach, or perhaps explore the delights of La Rochelle. Just north of La Rochelle is the trendy 'hotspot' island of Ile de Ré which is accessible via a toll bridge. Certainly worth the visit to sit at one of the waterside seafood restaurants sipping a cool glass of wine!

Cognac is about 30 minutes away driving past vast vineyards and it's worth taking time not only to visit one of the distilleries, such as Remy Martin, but to explore this pretty riverside town.

A short drive away takes you to the chateau of the Roche Courbon near St Porchaire, the small market town of St Savinien on the river Charente, Port d'Envaux where you can picnic beside the river, and the bustling town of Saintes with its boutiques, markets and ampitheatre.

Futuroscope fun park is 1 hour up the A10 motorway from St Jean d'Angély and the Marais Poitevin with its boat hire and inland waterways is just 30 minutes away.

How to Get There

From the Ferry Ports: approximately 4 hrs from St Malo, 5 hours from Cherbourg and Le Havre, 6 hrs from Dieppe.

From Airports: approximately 1 hr from La Rochelle and Poitiers and 2 hrs from Bordeaux, Tours and Nantes.
